The hugely popular free to play multiplayer game Fortnite recently celebrated its first birthday. The Fortnite phenomenon has swept the globe, captivating audiences around the world and further emphasising just how big the gaming industry is becoming. We’re sure you’ve seen the stories of aggrieved parents online, calling for the game to be shut down because their children are addicted or even tales of children spending hundreds of pounds on their parent's credit cards without their knowledge or permission. Whatever the issue may be the general consensus of the articles covered from parents viewpoint on the game are usually from a negative stance. So what we’re about to tell you might come as a bit of a surprise…
Some parents are encouraging their children to play Fortnite.
Recently the Wall Street Journal ran an article stating that parents in America are paying for their kids to have private one on one tuition from their very own Fortnite tutors in an effort for their children to become more successful in the game and achieve more ‘Victory Royales'. One website claimed it has hired out 1,400 Fortnite coaches since March, with some coaches charging as much as $35 (£27.76) an hour!
To some people, this may seem absolutely ridiculous, but when you stop and think about it, is it actually? I mean thousands of parents across the country routinely take their children to weekly practices, whether that's football, swimming, music lessons or gymnastics. They are paying for their child to learn, improve and ultimately develop in the hobby that they love doing. Besides, with prize pools at the biggest tournaments being made up of millions… YES, MILLIONS, becoming a professional gamer these days can be a very profitable vocation, and that's before we start talking about YouTube and Twitch.
