Setting Smart Goals

I never thought Luke actually failed in the cave rather it taught him that he wasn’t ready just yet to face Vader.

Yoda specifically told Luke he failed at the cave. Yoda just knew Luke wasn't ready to confront his Father, it just means you can’t have what you want right now, you must set a goal and work towards it so you are ready when you get there.

It’s just like this in your career, financial, emotional, attitude and physical wants.

First consider what you want to achieve, and then commit to it. Set SMART goals, that’s (specific, measureable, attainable, relevant and trackable) goals that motivate you. Write them down to make them feel tangible. 

Then plan the steps you must take to realise your goals, and cross off each one as you work through them.

Like Luke many people feel as if they are lost in this cave. They work hard, but they don't seem to get anywhere.

A key reason that they feel this way is that they haven't spent enough time thinking about what they want from life and haven't set themselves proper goals to get out of the cave. After all, would you really set out on a major journey with no real idea of your destination? Nine Frauline.

A good way is using the Star Wars cave analogy and imagine yourself in the cave and to get out you must first set the end goal to get out then set some smaller goals within the cave that are achievable in the near future that are in the same direction to the end goal.

"That place… is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is. In you must go."
"What's in there?"
"Only what you take with you."


You must realise that some goals you set may take time for you to get to months even years in my case and there is gonna be times that you will want to quit or set another goal because your not getting there fast enough.

In striking down Vader in the cave Luke gave into his fear.

Don’t give into this you will eventually get there you just need to believe in yourself and your goal, remember it’s ok to have a breather just don’t give up on your end game.

"Brought you here, the galaxy has. Your path, clearly, this is."
"You know what I'm looking for."
"Something lost. A part of yourself, perhaps. That which you seek, inside, you will find."



S - specific, significant, stretching

M - measurable, meaningful, motivational

A - agreed upon, attainable, achievable, acceptable, action-oriented

R - realistic, relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented

T - time-based, time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable


Example of Some Personal Goals

Career – What level do you want to reach in your career, or what do you want to achieve?
Financial – How much do you want to earn, by what stage? How is this related to your career goals?
Education – Is there any knowledge you want to acquire in particular? What information and skills will you need to have in order to achieve other goals?
Family – Do you want to be a parent? If so, how are you going to be a good parent? How do you want to be seen by a partner or by members of your extended family?
Artistic – Do you want to achieve any artistic goals?
Attitude – Is any part of your mindset holding you back? Is there any part of the way that you behave that upsets you? (If so, set a goal to improve your behaviour or find a solution to the problem.)
Physical – Are there any athletic goals that you want to achieve, or do you want good health deep into old age? What steps are you going to take to achieve this?
Pleasure – How do you want to enjoy yourself? (You should ensure that some of your life is for you!)
Public Service – Do you want to make the world a better place? If so, how?


Let me Break it Down for You Luke

Set a lifetime goals first. Then, set a plan of smaller goals that you need to complete to reach this lifetime goal. Keep the process going by regularly reviewing and updating your goals give them a massive tick as you go. And remember to take time to enjoy the journey and satisfaction of achieving your goals when you do so.
