What Is Branding?

BRANDS AREN'T CONTROLLED BY COMPANIES

People need to understand that brands are not controlled by companies but by customers. This thought process can help small businesses and start ups to understand they need to communicate the right message in the mind of their customers and have them saying and thinking what they want them to say and think.

IT’S NOT UP TO YOU

It has been made easier through the help of social media for small businesses to have a platform to compete with very large corporations to position themselves in the mind of their customer. Having a Facebook business page, a Twitter account, a blog, LinkedIn page, can help construct a brand image in the mind of your customer, a brand image that you want them to develop. Remember though you can manage your brand image, you can try to manage what people think about you, but bottom line is, it’s up to them. 

WHAT YOU SAYIN?

I see it every day and I say to each of my clients, you have to get the person, the personality, the character behind the brand right first before the business can work. Every company and every individual should have a brand, simply because once people see you they will form an impression of you, ensure that you are communicating the right message and they will form the correct impression of you. They will then connect with you and be more inclined to buy from you instead of some other Tom, Dick or Harry.

YOUR LOGO IS NOT YOUR BRAND

Businesses should have a logo and that logo should be placed everywhere and I mean everywhere, but this is NOT your brand.

YOUR BRAND IS NOT YOUR WEBSITE

Your website itself should be built in a way that communicates what you want it to say to your customers, but your website is NOT your brand.

A STRAPLINE IS NOT A BRAND

While having a tagline is important to your brand strategy, It is supposed to communicate the essence of your brand or what you want consumers to think about you, but yup…you guessed it…your strapline is NOT your brand. 

GET IT RIGHT FROM THE OFF

Start up businesses haven’t got the time or money to get it wrong from the off and that’s why branding is so friggin important, it’s crucial people understand what it is and what it is not in order to succeed.
